Science Week 3 day 1: Understanding our eco-system

We started the day with our usually tefilah and learned about Tish B'av, its history and observance.

And then on to something more fun and scientific.
Teams of scientific researchers worked within their area of expertise with some incredible results.

One team is working on the time-space continuum and building a time machine.

The chemists worked on the reaction between white glue and laundry starch.

The resulting polymer chains were remarkable. Then Professor Jacob had an idea to extend the experiment. He recommended the team get straws. The results were incredible.

At Beer Sheva Park the scientists worked on Physics and motions.

Since we were practically in Israel (Beer Sheva Park) we went on a scavenger hunt, searching for information about all of the incredible science and technology invented in our Homeland.

Then we went to Rainier Urban Farm where we learned about eco-science. We learned about how crops grow, from worms and roly polys in the compost to picking fresh and delicious crops.  Some campers complained about the lack of traditional farm animals (they only raise chickens) but the farmers explained that without the worms and crops, there would be no animals or people. Everything is interdependent and we need to value things at every level.

One of the farmers, Tamir, is Israeli, and our scientists shared with him some of their new knowledge about the science of Israel.

Our scientists had a busy day. They will continue their research all week and on Friday there will be a Science Fair at BCMH. Everyone is invited!
